Bangladeshi-American Pharmacists Association (BAPA)

bapa-logoPharmacy is the health profession that links the health sciences with the chemical sciences, and it is charged with ensuring the safe and effective use of medication. Pharmacists are highly trained and skilled healthcare professionals who perform various roles to ensure optimal health outcomes for their patients. Many pharmacists are also small-business owners, owning the pharmacy in which they practice.

Pharmacists of the USA are represented by the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) and various other national and state organizations. The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) represents pharmacists and pharmacy associations from all over the world.

Pharmacy graduates who immigrated from Bangladesh took the initiative to form a professional organization on March 3rd, 1991, a meeting was convened at the Tandoor Restaurant in Queens, New York. The same year, a constitution was adopted. The organization was named the Bangladeshi-American Pharmacists’ Association (BAPA). It is a non-profit, non-political, non-religious, pharmacy-oriented voluntary professional organization.

The purpose of the organization is:

  • To foster cooperation and collaboration among Bangladeshi pharmacists residing in North America.
  • To build and maintain relations with other pharmacists’ associations in North America.
  • To support the profession of pharmacy in Bangladesh and in North America.
  • To support and encourage the development of Pharmaceutical Science in Bangladesh.
  • To develop and conduct programs for maintaining and improving the professional standards.
  • To promote the welfare of members’ families in case of need.
  • To protect the professional interests of members of the Association.

The word pharmacy is derived from its root word pharma which was a term used since the 1400–1600s. The scope of pharmacy practice includes more traditional roles such as compounding and dispensing medications, and it also includes more modern services related to patient care, including clinical services, reviewing medications for safety and efficacy, and providing drug information. Pharmacists, are the experts on drug therapy and are the primary health professionals who optimize medication use to provide patients with positive health outcomes.

Mission:
We strive to organize Bangladeshi-American Pharmacists in a strong and professional platform so they can be more successful in their career and have a fulfilling experience in this country. We work to get the members involved in the socio-political process that determines their future. We hope to motivate everyone to contribute their time and talent to the betterment of the pharmacy profession here at home and in Bangladesh.

Specifically, the purpose of the organization is to foster cooperation and collaboration among Bangladeshi pharmacists residing in North America; to build and maintain relations with other pharmacists’ associations in North America, to support the profession of pharmacy in Bangladesh and in North America; to support and encourage the development of Pharmaceutical Science in Bangladesh; to develop and conduct programs for maintaining and improving the professional standards; to promote welfare of members’ families in case of need; to protect the professional interests of members of the Association.

Membership of the Association is open to any individual provided that person meets the following criteria:

  1. The person shall be residing in North America.
  2. The person shall have at least a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy.
  3. The person shall be of Bangladeshi origin by virtue of birth, domicile, or descent.

Membership of the Association consists of Active, Associate, Honorary, and Life members as outlined by the By-laws of the Association.

BAPA offers the following activities from which the members can benefit:

  • Conferences, workshops, publications, online information, and a network of professionals.
  • Opportunity to chair a program.
  • Speak or present at any of the scientific seminars or workshops
  • Author articles or join the editorial board
  • Show off your talent at cultural events

Membership Info:
